What is an Emergency Services Unit (ESU) Clinician?

An ESU Clinician participates in Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health’s (NeMCMHA) on-call on week nights and weekends. These individuals are casual contract agency employees who provide after-hours psychiatric emergency services to our community including triage, crisis intervention and stabilization, referral, and/or brief therapy for individuals in need of crisis services.

What is a Casual Contract employee? Casual Contract employees are able to determine their own schedules – filling in vacant roles when they are available to assist the primary staff at the agency. This position would be 5p-8a on weekdays and also through the weekends. This role is great for retirees who want to remain active, for students or parents who need flexibility, or for anyone looking for some extra work on the side.

Is there training available? Yes! NeMCMHA offers 100% paid training.

Do I need a license in order to apply? Yes. Appropriate licensure in social work, counseling, psychology, or registered nurse is required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Nursing Degree, Bachelor's in Social Work, or Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work.
  • Must have appropriate certification, licensure, or registration as required.

Experience:

  • One or more years of relevant mental health experience preferred.
  • Lived experience with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders valued.

Other:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (as determined by the agency).
  • Good communication skills are essential.
  • Functional computer literacy is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an Emergency Services Unit Clinician you will:

  • Provide after-hours psychiatric emergency services to include triage, crisis intervention and stabilization, referral, and/or brief therapy for individuals presenting to crisis services.
  • Triage, assess, and report mental health status and planned course of action of individual served to agency psychiatrist and other team members.
  • Be responsible for completing pre-admission screening to determine Medicaid eligibility of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization or need for available and appropriate alternative services.
  • Assist with securing placement to accepting inpatient psychiatric units or crisis residential services.
  • Demonstrates understanding of assessment and diagnosis for persons requesting Mental Health Services in accordance with the latest editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
  • Demonstrate effective case recording in accordance with NeMCMHA’s "Case Recording Guidelines”.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Team, providing emergent assessment of families in crisis.
  • Demonstrate an ability to provide emergent mental health services.
  • Conduct crisis contacts, in person or via telephone as requested.
  • Assist with safety plan development including follow up plans to ensure proper referral, linkage, and coordination of services.
  • Secure emergency transportation, as needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of universal precautions, standards of practice including but not limited to confidentiality, recipient rights, and emergency protocol.

This posting takes place on-site. Due to the nature of the work, remote employment is currently unavailable for this position.
