Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority is an organization, founded in the late sixties, designed to serve the needs of the citizens of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle Counties. While originally developed to provide outpatient services, the agency has grown to meet the wide-range needs of its citizens with multiple programs, support services, treatment and evidence-based practices.
The priority population of those eligible for services include individuals who may have a severe and persistent mental illness, children with a severe emotional disturbance, individuals who may have an intellectual/developmental disability and individual who may have a substance use disorder that is co-occurring with a mental illness. Individuals served will not be denied access to services due to inability to pay. With over 50 years of experience, the Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority Board has adopted a Mission and Vision Statement and defined Core Values.
In 1968, Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Services became a community mental health agency, five years after the State of Michigan passed Public Act 54 to allow for counties to create and provide services for individuals with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities and substance abuse disorders outside of psychiatric hospitals and institutions. At that time, Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health was a seven-county region -- Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Presque Isle. In 1979, three of these counties decided to create their own community mental health program. Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda formed what is now AuSable Valley Community Mental Health Authority.
